The morning of the 16th I called at 6:30am to make sure the Labor & Delivery unit had a bed and a nurse for me. I was in luck, so my 7:30am appt stood. David and I dropped the boy's off at a friend's house and headed to the U of U hospital. Our great friend, Adrianne, was the charge nurse on labor and delivery the previous night and was getting off shift. She assigned us to a great nurse, Brooke. We chatted with her when we got there and then got situated in our room. Pitocin was started about 9:30 am. I was about 4+ cm dilated and 80% effaced starting out, so I was in a great position for induction. We decided to start my epidural about 11:30am so then there was time for it to do it's work before they broke my water. Dr. Abby Watson, my OB, stopped by prior to going into her surgical case to check in and let me know they would brake my water after her case so that she would be around to deliver me.
They broke my water about 12:40pm. The babies head was low and I was 6cm dilated and still about 80% effaced. As soon as my water broke things changed. The baby started having decels and they put oxygen on me. I immediately felt more pressure and the need to push. Brooke, then nurse checked me and I was dilated to 7cm, then a couple minutes later when I continued to tell her there was more pressure and I was progressing, she checked me again and I was 8cm. I was also starting to get nauseous and shaky. I knew go time was almost here. A resident came in and checked me again and I was now complete. I was ready to push. Everyone was telling me to stall so Dr. Watson could get in the room. The ER resident seemed to be moving in slow motion to get his gown on and I just wanted to push. Then Dr. Watson came in and it was time! I pushed with contractions and it seemed like he was not coming out. I was wondering what was taking so long. Everyone told me I was pushing so well and he was almost there. Well, he was stuck.... I didn't completely realize what was going on, but David informed me afterwards. He had shoulder dystocia and then his other arm was bent out and making it even harder for him to get out. His head was out and the cord was wrapped around his neck. There were a lot of people standing around encouraging me as I pushed and they called an internal code just to have more staff available. Fortunately after there was much pushing, pulling and tugging, Mason David Bailly entered this world completely at 1:08pm! His first apgar was 7 and the second was 8. There were no problems from the slight shoulder dystocia and I got to hold my sweet baby boy. He cried and I knew he was okay.
I asked David what would have happened if they couldn't get him out. I was worried it would have been a c-section, but he said, his head was out, they just would have given me a large episiotomy. I am so thankful he came out because I didn't have to get an episiotomy and I didn't even have to get any stitches. I had very minor tearing and Dr. Watson thought it would heal better on it's on.
We are so blessed that things went well, no post partum hemorrhage and Mason is a dream. He is so sweet and has slept so much. I have given him lots of snuggles and the boys love him too.
He weighed in at 7 lbs, 6 oz and 20.5 in long. He has lighter hair and when he cries, his lower lip looks just like Jonas. Other than that, Mason is his own little boy. He looks different than both Porter and Jonas.
Both the boys have been up here twice to meet him and so I could give them love. They were little tornadoes in here blowing around, but so cute with Mason wanting to hold him and telling him they love him. David and I are so blessed to have 3 boys to call ours.
Naming him took some time. We knew his middle name would be David, but we mulled over a couple of different names. His official name was not confirmed until over 24 hours after he was born and a poll of some friends and loved ones. The other top contender was Jordan David, but I thought it was too close to Jonas. So, Mason it is. The funny thing is, Mason is a name David had brought up when Porter was born that I vetoed at that time.
More to come about our sweet baby.
Nurse Brooke and Dr. Watson, I was in great hands.
Always the proud dada.
